Workshop is open to all banjo players. We will discuss exploring the fingerboard and shortcuts for connecting chord positions and progressions. An overview of Scruggs style, melodic style and single string style will be presented, with thoughts about integrating licks in these different styles when creating solos. Q&A about any banjo related topics will be included as time permits. We will have fun!
Chicago born and bred, Greg Cahill has been playing bluegrass banjo since the early 1970s; he formed The Special Consensus in 1975. That means he’s been making a living with his banjo for 35 years. He tours with his band year-round nationally and internationally. He has composed many banjo instrumentals and released three solo albums featuring his unique style: “Lone Star” (1980) with guests Jethro Burns and Byron Berline, “Blue Skies” (1992) with fellow Chicagoan Don Stiernberg, and “Night Skies” (1998) with Don and guests Sam Bush, Glen Duncan and Tom Boyd. He has appeared on all fifteen(!) Special Consensus recordings—the first two on Chicago labels (Tin Ear Music and Acoustic Revival), four on Kentucky-based Turquoise Records, one on Special C’s Shy Town Music label, seven on Pinecastle Records, and the latest, “35,” on Compass Records (the recording includes six original songs by the current band lineup and six songs from previous Special C recordings now out of print.
